Court, Certificates and Legal
Yes. The Parenting After Separation course is commonly accepted by the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) and Magistrates Courts. We have hundreds of parents completing this course each month who are currently before the court.
Upon completion, a Certificate of Completion is issued by Parenting After Separation within 24 to 48 hours. This can be provided to the court, your family lawyer, your Independent Children’s Lawyer (ICL), or your co-parent.
At the end of the course, your completed work is submitted to us and we issue your Certificate of Completion within 24 to 48 hours. You can then forward your certificate to your lawyer, co-parent, mediator, or ICL.
If you have not received your certificate after 48 hours, please contact us on 1300 919 019 or at admin@parentingafterseparation.com.au.
No. Each parent enrols and completes the course independently. There is no requirement for both parents to participate at the same time, although many families find it beneficial when both do.
If the court has ordered both parents to complete the course, each will need to enrol separately and receive their own certificate.
Yes. The Parenting After Separation course is widely used by parents ordered or encouraged by the court to complete a co-parenting education program. We recommend confirming with your lawyer that this course meets the specific requirements of your order.
An Independent Children’s Lawyer (ICL) is appointed by the court to represent the best interests of children in family law proceedings, independently of both parents. Yes – you can share your Certificate of Completion with your ICL.
High Conflict Situations
Yes. The Parenting After Separation course is specifically designed to support parents in high-conflict situations. For parents in very high-conflict situations, we also offer the Breaking the Cycle of Conflict course.
You can enrol and complete a course at any stage of court proceedings. Many parents use the Certificate of Completion as evidence of engagement with co-parenting education. We recommend speaking with your family lawyer about how completing a course fits with your overall strategy.
Co-parenting involves both parents working cooperatively on parenting decisions with regular communication. Parallel parenting is a structured approach for high-conflict situations where direct contact between parents is kept to a minimum – each parent operates independently, with all communication written and child-focused only.

Family Dispute Resolution
Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) is a structured mediation process in which a trained, accredited practitioner helps separating parents communicate about their children and work toward practical agreements – without going to court. It is child-focused, forward-looking, and confidential.
In most cases, yes. Under Section 60I of the Family Law Act 1975, parents are required to make a genuine attempt at FDR before filing a parenting application with the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. Exceptions apply where family violence is present, the matter is urgent, or an FDRP determines FDR is not appropriate.
Yes. Jasmin Newman is an accredited Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP) and Co-parenting Coach with over 10 years of experience working with separated families. To find out more, visit her profile page or get in touch.
A Section 60I Certificate is issued by an accredited FDRP after the Family Dispute Resolution process. It documents that FDR was attempted and is typically required when filing a parenting application with the Family Court.
